Marine mammals such as porpoises and dolpins, seals, whales, etc. can breathe-hold and dive deep into the ocean in search of prey. When a human wants to swim under water, he/she typically takes several deep breathes and then fills the lungs with air before taking the underwater swim. By contrast, a seal will forcefully expel air from its lungs prior to the diving episode. Why do they do this? Hint: it has to do with “the bends”
