For the following questions, list the independent variable, the dependent variable, and whether an independent groups design or a repeated measure design would be more appropriate. Be sure to include a brief explanation for your answer. 1) Do people who are deprived of sleep have more vivid dreams when they finally return to a normal sleep pattern? What is the IV? What is the DV? Which is more appropriate: an Independent Groups or Repeated Measures design? Why? 2) What type of therapy works best for people with PTSD? What is the IV? What is the DV? Which is more appropriate: an Independent Groups or Repeated Measures design? Why? 3)A faculty adviser worked diligently over the summer to prepare an attractive brochure to give to her advisees when she first met them. The brochure described the various ways the adviser could be helpful to students, and the adviser hoped that using the brochure would increase the number of students who came back to see her in the semester. To try to maximize the effectiveness of the brochure, the adviser worked hard at being especially upbeat and friendly during the first advising meeting with students. Seventy percent of the students who received the brochure came back to see her as compared to only 35% of the students who came back to see her the previous year (when no brochure was used). The adviser concluded that the brochure had the desired effect. Is there a problem with this conclusion? If so, identify that problem. 4) A psychologist who was interested in the effect of a new therapy for depression recruited a sample of 20 individuals who sought relief from their depression. At the beginning of the study, he asked all participants to complete an inventory about their symptoms. The mean inventory score for the sample was 42 (the highest possible score is 63), indicating severe depressive symptoms. (Individuals who are not depressed typically score in the 0 to 10 range). During the next 16 weeks, the psychologist treated participants in the study with a new treatment. At the end of the treatment, the participants completed the depression inventory again. The mean score for the posttest was 12, indicating that, on average, participants depression symptoms were dramatically reduced. The psychologist concluded that the treatment was effective; that is, the treatment caused their depressive symptoms to improve. I want you think of potential threats to validity, and how those threats might also be responsible for the change in scores. In your response, first explain how maturation likely plays a role in this study. Then, explain how could you test if maturation was responsible for the effects here?
