Choose a musical artist (from any music era) and provide a 1-2 page summary of the background or history of the artist. Next, pick one of his or her main works (songs or compositions) and explain:
- The meaning
- The musical elements
- The contribution that this piece has had to the development of music
If possible, find a way to listen to the piece so that you can comment on your reaction to the work.
For example, Danny Elfman (works with Tim Burton) is a composer and John Williams from Star Wars. Elvis is not. They need to have written their own (or someone else’s music)–Elvis, for example, didn’t write his own songs. But a composer is different than a pop star.A composer doesn’t have to be a classical one–their music doesn’t need to come from the 16th century.
